Bertrand Meyer Receives ACM Software System Award

It has been announced that Bertrand Meyer is this year's recipient of the ACM Software System Award. The Software System Award is awarded to "an institution or individual(s) recognized for developing a software system that has had a lasting influence, reflected in contributions to concepts, in commercial acceptance, or both.

Dr. Meyer receives the award for "designing and developing the Eiffel programming language, method and environment, embodying the Design by Contract approach to software development and other features that facilitate the construction of reliable, extendible and efficient software.

John W. Backus Passes Away at 82

People

John W. Backus, who was involved with the development of programming languages such as FORTRAN, ALGOL 60 and FP, has passed away at the age of 82.

Peter Naur Named 2005 Turing Award Winner

Awards, People

Dr. Peter Naur has been named by the ACM as the winner of the 2005 A. M. Turing Award. He is awarded it for his work on Algol 60.
